Simon Berz comes to Fukuoka with archaic soundscapes that combine basalt stones as instruments with contemporary electronics.
Swiss drummer and sound artist Simon Berz explores the connections between sound, nature, notation, improvisation and cultural exchange. His experimental, challenging practice crosses a wide range of artistic forms. Joining him is sound artist Kazuya Matsumoto, who explores a singular approach to sound beyond the boundary between sounds he creates and the sounds of his surroundings. His immersive performances, woven from an array of sound-making objects and methods, have made a commanding impression across many different settings.
The lineup brings together artists with distinctive approaches to acoustic sound, including Seiryo Ito, who explores new ways of producing sound on the mandolin. A collaborative live session by Simon Berz, Kazuya Matsumoto, Seiryo Ito and vvekapipo is also planned.

Using materials such as stones and liquids, he creates captivating, unconventional sounds. His performances are characterised by their energy, unpredictability and invitation to audience participation. He continually pushes the limits of creativity to create distinctive artistic experiences.
Kazuya Matsumoto
Tokyo-based musician, sound artist and drummer Kazuya Matsumoto creates diverse forms of sonic expression using objects, sculptures, natural materials, the body and devices found in each environment, including things not normally considered instruments.
He works to bring the sounds he produces into an inseparable whole with the environmental sounds that arise by chance in each place. Through improvisation, he seeks to offer new perspectives on familiar everyday phenomena and draw listeners into sound.
He has released three works on the renowned minimal ambient label SPEKK: Mizu no Katachi (2015), Ochiru Chiru Michiru (2017) and Mujo (2022).
