Phew, a founding member of the legendary art punk band Aunt Sally and an internationally acclaimed electronic musician, returns to Fukuoka after several years away.
Beginning with a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto and her debut solo album Phew, made with CAN’s Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, she has developed an exceptionally intricate sound that combines the taut, discordant atmosphere of avant-rock with a ferocity all her own.
Through successive works combining voice and electronic music, and appearances at major events in Japan and abroad, including FUTURE TERROR × DOMMUNE, rural and MUTEK, Phew has earned international recognition as an electronic artist. Joining her are Kyushu-based artists whose avant-garde sounds are both delicate and dynamic.
Phew
With her striking recent performance at rural still fresh in memory, Phew remains a pioneering, legendary musician. A founding member of Aunt Sally, she has continued to evolve through collaborations with celebrated musicians including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Conny Plank, CAN’s Holger Czukay, DAF’s Chrislo Haas, Ana da Silva of The Raincoats, and Seiichi Yamamoto, formerly of Boredoms.
Her distinctive lyrical world, rich in literary sensibility and intelligence, and a sound that at times churns in the depths and at others erupts with piercing force, remind us that Phew herself constitutes a genre.
Her psychedelic intensity cuts into techno, noise, drone, experimental music and any other music with the potential to probe beneath the surface. Bringing a powerful individuality and presence to every setting, Phew continues to reveal a core we have yet to fully grasp.
